Joseph Edward Duncan Pleading Guilty Again

Joseph Edward Duncan III, still one of the most complex, evil criminals I've ever written about, will plead guilty on December 3 in a federal court in Boise, Idaho. Duncan had already pled to state charges related to kidnapping and murder in May, 2005, but it seemed for some time that he might fight the federal case against him.

Duncan will now face a penalty trial in Boise on January 28. A jury will be tasked with deciding whether or not the man who has now basically admitted to kidnapping, child rape and mass-murder should get the death penalty.

Jet Duncan's weblog is still online: http://fifthnail.blogspot.com/. A second blog was posted on his behalf after his arrest: http://5nrevelations.blogspot.com/. The latter blog was where Duncan wrote [prior to pleading guilty to anything anywhere]:
And a very good friend of mine who happens to be a "serial killer" told me that he committed more sex crimes during the two years he was on parole (including killing three children) than he did in the entire five years he was not on parole. In fact—he tells me that while he was not on parole he committed NO crimes until the police started doing illegal quarterly registration checks at his home (coming to his house to make sure he was complying with the law). He said that was when he started looking for control again—to prove (consciously and subconsciously to himself) that "they" couldn’t control him.
Both weblogs give readers an unprecedented look into the mind of a sexually sadistic psychopath.

Neither contain content that is objectionable on the surface. Reading the original Fifth Nail in particular is remarkable in that after a while, Duncan's voice seems to lodge in your head... a profoundly unsettling, nausea-inducing experience.

There will always be more to write about a monster like Jet Duncan. Jules Hammer runs an entire blog and Web community dedicated to discussing Duncan, his crimes, and related issues. Check out The Cellar for links to many of the other sites created by Duncan, and for some remarkable insight into the deadly swath this innocuous-looking serial killer cut through the lives of so many innocent families.

Hostages Taken at Clinton Office in New Hampshire **UPDATED**

(SEE UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF ENTRY.)

"You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape..."
~ unnamed young woman carrying an infant, speaking to a witness near the scene.

An armed man walked into Senator Hillary Clinton's campaign office on 28 N. Main Street in Rochester, New Hampshire around 1 p.m. ET today. Graying, 46-year-old Leeland Eisenberg [link to a photo of Eisenberg] told everyone to get on the floor and then revealed what appeared to be an explosive device strapped to his chest.

Three people, two young women and a baby, have since been released from the scene. Eisenberg may still have at least two captives. MSNBC reported that he demanded to speak with Mrs. Clinton.

Presidential candidate Clinton was scheduled to address the Democratic National Committee in Virginia today. She elected not to speak once this situation came to light.

Eisenberg was known to local Rochester authorities, and he'd allegedly had "mental problems" in the past. An interview broadcast on Manchester television station WMUR gave info purportedly from Eisenberg's stepson. The stepson said that his stepfather might be wearing road flares on his chest, and that his Eisenberg had said he should "watch the news" today. The stepson said that Eisenberg was unemployed and in the middle of a divorce, but was harmless and that he may have believed that the attention garnered from his act would force his hospitalization.

Some reports from April, 2007, seem to show that Eisenberg was no harmless local eccentric. He was charged on April 5 with two counts of stalking. Then in June of this year Eisenberg was charged with DUI.

Eisenberg's record of annoying local Rochester authorities in the past was notable enough for him to merit a mention in a letter to the editor of Foster's Daily Democrat. In March of this year someone signing off as Melissa Picard from Rochester wrote the following:
To the editor:

The Rochester Police Department was trying to be proactive and help the citizen's of Rochester from thieves and what they got was a slap in the face.

For every minute that Capt. Dumas has to spend dealing with the antics of Leeland Eisenberg it is one less minute he has to spend helping someone with something important. Mr. Eisenberg is wasting the time and the money of the taxpayers.

Police officers risk their life every day helping people, and to make them question if they should put a piece of paper in a car is just wrong.

Why can't people focus on the important things?

Melissa Picard
Rochester
Picard was probably referring to this: "Fliers prompt criticism: Outcry erupts over Rochester police warnings left in unlocked vehicle." A quote from the article, published in Foster's Daily Democrat on March 16, 2007:
Leeland Eisenberg of Gonic is questioning the new police strategy that had officers checking for unlocked vehicles, opening the doors and placing fliers on the driver's seat urging residents to lock their doors.

Eisenberg said police did this to his red Chevrolet Monte Carlo early Tuesday morning while it was parked at the McDuffee Brook Place apartment complex, where he lives. Eisenberg said he's "outraged" because police opened his vehicle without permission.

Eisenberg said he's complained to the state attorney general, the governor and the U.S. attorney...
The article quoted Eisenberg on this subject at length: "What they're doing is going around during the middle of the night under the pretense they're looking out for your property rights and they're telling you 'we found your car unlocked and you should always lock your car and valuables up, don't be a victim of property crime [...] Well, I just was a victim of property crime; you entered my vehicle unlawfully without a warrant."

Eisenberg showed a (perhaps unsurprising) streak of strong paranoia. He went on to claim that police had also searched his vehicle. He called the police fliers "intelligence gathering" and said, "This is nothing more than a gimmick to get around the Constitution and go around in the middle of the night upon unsuspecting citizens in their own yard and search their vehicles..."

Early Friday evening, another hostage was released from the Clinton campaign office. Eisenberg is still apparently holed up in the office, and he may still have a hostage.

UPDATE, 6:00 PM ET

Eisenberg was due in court today. From Foster's Daily Democrat:
Eisenberg, of 7 Brook Drive in Somersworth, was scheduled to appear at Strafford County Superior Court at 1:30 p.m. today with his wife Lisa (Warren) Eisenberg for a final domestic violence hearing. Court officials were unable to provide the domestic complaint filed against Eisenberg.

[...]

In the papers, Warren said the divorce was a result irreconcilable differences and complained that Eisenberg suffered from "severe alcohol and drug abuse, several verbal abuse and threats...
Eisenberg was already dealing with the divorce from his wife in May of this year. He posted an ad online attempting to sell a 1996 Dodge Ram "handyman van." Eisenberg wrote:
divorce forces immediate sale, just put $600.00 worth of new tires all weather all terain [sic], new inspection, i just put a new muffler, ball joint and rear tire rod, brakes , tune up and fluid flush. it really is nice inside and out runs great, you may view or take for a drive , here at my place of work, Welch Automotive group...
UPDATE, 6:17 PM ET

Leeland Eisenberg, clad in a dress shirt and necktie, was taken into custody by New Hampshire authorities shortly after 6 p.m.

All hostages were safely released from the Clinton campaign office, and Eisenberg was arrested without further incident.

The Mysterious Missing King of Hearts (Roger Lee Dillon) **UPDATED**

The King of Hearts is missing. His status on his MySpace profile says he was "tired of waiting."

Roger Lee Dillon, a 22-year-old resident of Youngstown, Ohio, and his 24-year-old girlfriend Nicole N. Boyd have not been seen since it was discovered on November 27 that more than $7 million was missing from Dillon's place of employment, AT Systems International in Liberty, OH. Dillon's vehicle, a purple pickup truck, was found late Thursday, but he, his girl and the $7.4 million are still in the wind.

The FBI says that neither Dillon nor his girlfriend are considered fugitives. Possibly armed and dangerous, and information leading to their whereabouts is worth $100,000.00 to Dillon's (no doubt former) employer, but... they're not fugitives.

Alarms that could only be disabled by employees were off when the money was taken, as was video surveillance, but still -- neither Dillon nor Nicole Boyd are fugitives, at the moment.

An FBI Agent spoke to Fox News about the case, and indicated that the Feds were indeed reviewing Dillon's MySpace profile for clues about the crime.

Could clues be found in Roger Dillon's "About Me" statement?
I am not for this world; I enjoy every moment for what it is and not what it could be. I find great amusement in consequences for my actions. I don't care what you think about it. Understanding it is not as important as enjoying it. Nothing makes me truly angry, there is no more room in this world for true anger. Nothing makes me truly sad, there are people out there who have a much better reason to be sad, I don't insult them by pretending I have it bad. True happiness is going for it, to hell with what society says. I am always striving now, though in secret and only one person knows; but she'll keep our secret. I am in love, I have always been. I wake up every morning with a smile, till I realize that I have to go to work. I am not you, I could never be. I am not for this world, this world is for me.
Well... yeah, maybe. The "she'll keep our secret" statement is rather hard to ignore. As are the final three sentences, beginning with "I wake up every morning with a smile, till I realize I have to go to work..."

Then there is the silly online quiz result Roger chose to post below his blurb quoted above. The quiz asked, "which deadly sin do you represent?" Roger's was "Greed."

Quizzes like that reveal nothing about a person's internal workings. When posted on a profile, they sometimes reveal conscious intent. Such quizzes are usually a few generic questions long, and anyone with a reasonable amount of intuition can skew the results towards what they want. Roger's quiz result could have been posted as a consciously chosen message. A bit of a middle finger to the world. If he indeed had something to do with all that missing money, that is.

In the article about this robbery posted on FoxNews.com, FBI Agent Scott Wilson was quoted in reference to Dillon's MySpace: "We're certainly looking at some of the comments on that MySpace page to see if we can develop further leads from that..."

Comments left by others for Roger Dillon do, at first blush, look strange. All the comments from Nicole Boyd are odd, consisting sometimes of bizarre little cartoons that come from a so-called "emo" collection. They are funny in an Edward Gorey-ish way, but strange choices considering what Roger Dillon said on his profile about "emo" music. Dillon wrote that he liked "Anything you can throw at me really. Jazz, hiphop, trance, and rock are what I listen to with regularity," but, "I do my best to hate emo and it's entire subculture..."

Then there were comments left by other friends. Particularly cryptic comments from a friend named Jared to Roger might raise suspicion. A quote from one left by Jared on September 25 this year might set digital tongues on a true crime message board a-wagging:
Hey: the operation we discussed last week is a go. I know you hate me but alas, there is no recourse. Not lightly do I make this decision. So I imagine I can give you the mental materials necessary and you can make it happen next Friday, sound good?
I can imagine the questions -- an abortive plot to rob Roger's employer as early as September? Is Jared in custody right now?

No. Probably not.

Jared and Roger, and most of their MySpace friends, were into the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. Roger said as much on his profile in his "General Interests":
Life and all things in it. I enjoy Dnd and always appreciate the chance to slay my friends in some Halo, or any other game which involves moderate-obscene amounts of violence.
At one point, Jared ran a MySpace Group (a message board hosted by MySpace) for an ongoing session among the friends titled "White Gate Campaign." On October 1 he posted a message titled "Farewell my dear storytellers," in which he said, "So if you didn't know, you should by now, that Roger is taking over the game. He'll be taking it in a new and exciting direction and I'm sure you'll all love it. All 4 of you..."

This may have been Roger Dillon's idea of a "new and exciting direction" -- "Golden Muses." He'd originally called it "Love of Death Campaign," but apparently had a change of heart.

A look at most of Dillon's posts on "Golden Muses" might be indecipherable to someone with no knowledge of D & D, but you could still tell that he'd done a lot of work, put a lot of thought into the endeavor.

All of Dillon's posts still on the board were made in November -- on the 15th, several on the 17th, and one on the 20th. His first short bulletin posted on the 15th was potentially interesting because it mentioned a date -- emphasis has been added:
Okee, sat nov 24, 3pm-3pm, 21st lvl start.
240k gold. more for good backstories posted on here
world is new acadia,10 months after Vol's ascension into divinity.
Any character you wanna play is fine, just be aware of no faction or gestalt...
It seems a little odd that Dillon might be committed enough to his game and his friends playing the game with him to run a 12-hour session just 3 days before allegedly stealing more than 7 million dollars.

It's the sort of seemingly inconsequential thing that actually could raise some big questions. If Roger Dillon and Nicole Boyd had a plan for the 27th and afterwards, were they just keeping up appearances until then? If Dillon and Ms. Boyd are innocent of wrongdoing (like the FBI said, they are not fugitives) then what did Dillon confront at work that day, and how did Nicole become involved? Reports indicate she didn't work at the same place.

Another post by Dillon to the same group could feed into the true crime/cyber-sleuthing enthusiast's tendency to make connections sometimes where none actually exist. We attribute genius qualities to criminals who are actually pretty shallow and stupid, much of the time. Dillon's "Afterstory" for his new campaign might read like an allegory, if you look at it just so. This passage, for example, could easily be interpreted as some sort of subconscious reference to Dillon and his girlfriend (redacted for length):
Calypso[, a] shadeling of little known origin [...] was the creator of an entirely new school of magic, Mimicry [...] In order to grant this girl the power to destroy the threat she was given the locations of the most ancient of Acadian artifacts, the Golden Muses. These four golden spheres, when gathered would grant one wish, no matter how powerful to the bearer, so the legends claimed.
Only one known mortal was ever known to use them; a shadeling rake known as Shadelo. A former lover of Hexis and rival to her lover Dav, he desired the power to win her over to himself, and thought the best way to do this was to murder his rival. [...]
so he spent three years gathering the information and tracking down these orbs and slaying thier gaurdians. His wish, to be the most powerful mortal alive...
In spite of that "most powerful mortal alive" bit (money = power) Dillon's story was probably exactly what it looked like, though -- just a framework for the next D & D campaign.

That's the trickiest part about "cyber-sleuthing" anything. Knowing when your imagination has taken over "the story" and wandered away from what you actually see in front of you.

Roger Dillon was 22, working at a low-end job, from the sound of it. He was a reasonably smart guy who had his D & D and his girlfriend, but otherwise, it seems like there wasn't much more for him out there. Did he see golden sunlight and a fantasy of leisurely freedom being locked away in those safes at work one too many times? Or were the circumstances surrounding his disappearance much more complicated, still unfathomable to anyone on the outside looking in?

If he and Nicole took the money and ran with it, did they have a plan, or are they even now trying to find a safe place to land? A place where they can sit on a bed stuffed with money and watch the surf come in?

Chances are, the answer will come sooner rather than later. And then for Roger -- and maybe Nicole -- the fantasy dragons will be gone. There will only be the echo of the dungeon.

UPDATE, 11/30/07

It's official -- Roger Lee Dillon and Nicole Boyd are fugitives, now. From the FBI:
Nicole Boyd and Roger Lee Dillon are wanted for their alleged involvement in the theft of approximately $7 million in cash and checks from an armored carrier facility in Liberty, Ohio, on November 26, 2007. Dillon was an employee of the business at the time of the robbery and has not shown up for work since the robbery. On November 30, 2007, a federal arrest warrant was issued by the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio, after Boyd was charged with aiding and abetting the commission of bank larceny...
Roger and Nicole will never earn all the experience points they'd need to dodge federal prison if they are caught with the missing money in their hands.

UPDATE, 12/01/07

Now that he and his girlfriend have been arrested, Roger Lee Dillon may not be too amused with the consequences of his actions. A quote from the AP:

Roger Lee Dillon, 22, and his girlfriend, Nicole N. Boyd, 24, were arrested early Saturday morning outside Beckley [West Virginia], FBI Special Agent Scott Wilson said.

Agents recovered "a large sum of money" at the time of the arrests, Wilson said. The FBI planned to hold a news conference on Monday, Wilson said...

Seeking Your Input

Due to the work I'm now doing for Radar, there are certain things I just don't have the time to do, so I'd like some reader input.

All the old entries from CrimeBlog.US are still available on the servers that held them. I've made efforts to move things over, but so far the move is decidedly incomplete. Now, I just don't have the time or energy to finish any work I'm doing for the magazine, publish new entries here, and then spend hours moving posts from one blog to the other.

So... from long-time readers I'd like to know which posts you'd like to see moved here. You can make your requests/suggestions in the comments on this post. You don't need to recall the exact title as long as you can remember the subject -- I'll figure it out.

Before you make your suggestion, though, please check to see if I've already moved the entry to this blog.

There's no easy way to move entries that I know of -- any software solutions I've found are filled with bugs and therefore unpredictable. So the moving has to be done by cut & paste. There are differences in the way this publishing format accepts html code, too, so some editing always has to be done when an entry from CrimeBlog.US is moved to this blog. It's time-consuming work, and reader suggestions as to old entries you'd like to see posted here would go a long way towards helping me focus my efforts as well as making this weblog more useful.

Also, remember -- I'm asking for tips or donations through the beginning of January, then removing the PayPal button, as I have reason to believe I'll no longer need it. It's a little like PBS's pledge drive. I plan to continue this blog, which is, of course, free. If I move an entry over that you've been wanting to read again, to comment on, you can consider any donations payment for that, as well.

Foxy Knoxy and Natalee

Radar has published a brief update I wrote on the investigation into the November 1, 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy. I encourage regular readers of this blog to leave comments on my posts there (over a week ago, I wrote an overview of the case that Radar published here), but if you prefer discussing it on posts like this at The True Crime Weblog, you may do so. If you check out any of my work for Radar, please consider clicking "Recommend it" at the bottom of each article published there -- no registration required for that [note: please, only click one time to recommend any article you like on Radar's site].

I won't be duplicating work between this blog and Radar, and that's the main reason I've posted entries here promoting anything crime-related that the magazine has been kind enough to accept from me (I've written a handful of non-crime related posts for Radar's "Fresh Intelligence" blog as well). My writing there is a little different style-wise, and (fortunately) gets edited by others along the way, but it's still basically the same old me.

An interesting observation occurred to me as I wrote this most recent Radar entry, but I didn't think the observation was appropriate to the item in question.

Natalee Holloway and Amanda Knox are two sides of the same coin, in a way.

Holloway, the Alabama teen who vanished from the island of Aruba on May 30, 2005, is in the news again after the three suspects originally arrested in connection with her disappearance were picked up again in Holland and on Aruba.

Natalee and Amanda -- both pretty, both smart. If Natalee were still alive (I have no doubt that the girl is deceased), they'd be the same age. They were both American girls on an adventure very far from home, and those adventures ended in tragedy.

Of course, it is the tragedy in each case that marks where the similarities between the girls cease. No one doubts anymore that Natalee was a victim, in some way. She may have been naive, unaware of just how much danger could lurk even on the sunny, friendly island of Aruba, but in the end, something happened to her, and someone -- at least 3 people, maybe more -- is/are hiding the truth.

As the story of Meredith Kercher's murder spins out in the world press, it becomes more apparent that "Foxy Knoxy" may be some kind of predatory, anti-social personality. Reports of her behavior while in jail reflect someone who is, at the very least, not in touch with conventional reality. Amanda's DNA reportedly being on the handle of the knife that had Meredith Kercher's DNA on the blade raises huge questions about her part -- if any -- in Kercher's murder.

Essentially, Natalee Holloway went abroad and her fate embodied parents' worst nightmares. A conspiracy of silence was created around Natalee's disappearance, and that conspiracy has stood the test of time, so far. Amanda Knox went abroad and became a kind of nightmare. Natalee's inhibitions may have slipped away a bit as she partied on that island, and someone took advantage of that. Amanda's inhibitions vanished as she partied in Europe, and she may have victimized another girl, and then become part of a new conspiracy to hide the truth behind the tragedy.

For one girl we have immense sympathy. Since Natalee's disappearance, only the Madeleine McCann case in Portugal has been more discussed on the Web and in the mainstream media. Everyone perceives Natalee Holloway's stolen promise and vitality.

But Americans, in particular, don't seem to know what to do or say when it comes to discussing Amanda Knox. While "Foxy Knoxy," a Seattleite (who probably rues the day she ever chose that screen name) has been subject to plenty of discussion in Seattle media, other U.S. coverage of Meredith Kercher's murder seems a little muted. The case is certainly not being ignored, but the reporting here has frequently seemed lackluster compared to the voracious European appetite for news in this case.

It seems like it's true -- over here, we're much more comfortable with women as potential victims in need of rescue. There are a few of us who find the idea of an attractive young woman being accused of having a role in a gruesome, sexually-charged, psychopathically-motivated crime fascinating, impossible to ignore. But in general, Americans prefer the idealized story, the idealized woman. We are much more comfortable expressing sympathy for beautiful, fair-haired Natalee Holloway than we are trying to understand the mind behind the impenetrable gaze of beautiful, fair-haired, possibly evil Amanda.

"Only God can judge me": Marriage and Murder on Long Island

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, one half of a newly-wed couple allegedly strangled the other half with an orange electrical cord in the couples' new, million-dollar Long Island, NY home. The motive for the murder still isn't clear.

The husband in this case: Michael Forbes, age 50, 6'1" and 250 lbs. Forbes served time for violent crimes in the 80s, most notably attempted murder.

The wife: Trinidad native Kelly Chadee Forbes, age 29, 5'5", 140-150 lbs.

It sounds like another tragically predictable instance of domestic homicide until the suspect is named. This time it is the wife, Kelly Chadee Forbes [her photo is on the left -- click to enlarge].

Emergency services answered a 911 call from Kelly Forbes on November 21, 2007. Responders found Michael Forbes unconscious at the Forbes residence. Forbes died an hour later. Cause of death: asphyxiation.

In a jailhouse interview published in the NY Daily News on Sunday the 25th, Kelly stated that the murder had been a matter of self-defense. "I was just trying to save myself," she said.

Kelly and Michael were married in September. They'd been dating for a year or so. Shortly after their wedding they moved to their new home -- away from Brooklyn, where Michael worked in real estate and where Kelly had lived for some time.

A reporter noted bruises on Kelly's arms. Crying, she indicated that abuse by Michael Forbes prompted the violence that took her husband's life.

The truth will eventually come out. For now there is only Kelly's testimony as to what happened. Her words and the troubling bruises.

Kelly Chadee Forbes had an online presence, much of it apparently posted prior to her relationship with Michael Forbes.

She had a MySpace profile that was private, visible only to friends, her last login date the day before her husband was murdered, November 20, 2007:

http://www.myspace.com/sxytrini78.

Kelly was "Sxytrini" on hi5.com, another social networking site:

http://sxytrini.hi5.com/.

That public profile showed that Kelly was receiving comments from some of her 226 friends as recently as November 19.

She'd apparently created the profile when she was still dating, as she'd written the following in a box labeled "Who I'd like to meet":
I'm a laid back person, I have a 7yr old daughter and a busy work schedule. I can be sarcastic at times and have a really good sense of humor so I would prefer someone who can laugh at themselves now and then...
Under "Interests," Kelly referenced the island where she was born:
I'm from Trinidad, so I like visiting when I have the opportunity. I love watching basketball, but somehow I never made it to a game...so that's something I want to do very soon...
And Kelly's favorite quote? "Only God Can Judge Me."

Kelly Forbes was KMarie117 on the networking site WAYN.com:

http://member.wayn.com/kmarie1127.

There she listed many of the same things about herself that she'd posted on her other site, including, again, her favorite quote: "Only God can judge me."

The same quote was prominently displayed on Kelly's Yahoo profile:

http://profiles.yahoo.com/kmarie1127.

That page, last updated at the end of September, 2006, made it clear that Kelly had done some Internet flirting, if not dating. Under "real name," Kelly wrote, "IF U DONT HAVE A PIC...4GET IT."

She probably meant she didn't want any strange men chatting her up unless she had some idea as to what they looked like.

Kelly Forbes also made it clear in several online profiles that she was a big fan of erotica author Zane. The pseudonymous author's work has been referred to as "black erotic fiction at its finest."

Did the attractive Kelly (her profile photos showed a much more appealing woman than her mugshot, of course) see her marriage to the older man as a trap, especially once she'd moved from Brooklyn out to the home on Long Island? Did she realize that the romantic, erotic scenarios she read in her favorite fiction were less likely to come true?

Was Kelly Forbes fighting back against abuse just a few months after she married the man she allegedly murdered? It's a compelling question. Was Michael Forbes intimidating and threatening all along, or (if Kelly is telling the truth) did the act of getting married flip some sort of switch in the ex-con's head?

Kelly Chadee Forbes would probably have only one answer to any discussion of what happened that Wednesday. That much seems obvious.

Her answer would surely be, "Only God can judge me."
