Kaitlin Aydell, age 13, is Missing...

A grim search is underway tonight in French Settlement, Louisiana for 13-year-old Kaitlin Marie Aydell. Kaitlin disappeared from the small community that sits between Baton Rouge and New Orleans on Thursday, February 1. She apparently vanished just after getting off her school bus.

Around 3 a.m. Friday, the Livingston Parish (La) sheriff's department arrested Mark Sterling Lewis, age 39. The ex-con is related to Kaitlin Aydell by marriage and lives with his wife in a mobile home behind the girl's family residence. According to this article in WBRZ's The Advocate, Lewis allegedly lied to detectives who were searching for Kaitlin. Lewis has been charged with one count of obstruction of justice.

Kaitlin Aydell had a MySpace page. Though the Advocate states that Kaitlin is a 7th grader and only 13, she gave her age as 16 in her profile. No link will be given for the profile now due to Kaitlin's actual age and the probable age of her friends.

Kaitlin had obviously done some work on her profile. She'd "pimped" it with a white, pink and black-striped background, and established a unique URL, something MySpace users can choose to do if they don't want to keep the membership number issued when a user first registers to use the site.

In her "About Me" section, Kaitlin wrote:

I'm really cute* I have blond hair with blue eyes* I love to play basketball and softball and football . . .
Under "Who I'd Like to Meet," Kaitlin's answer was, in a way, touching:
I would like to meet the boy of my dreams* He should be super hot* not too trashy* sweet* really nice to my friends*
Kaitlin's "general interests" were boys, shopping, basketball, and softball.

Comments left no question that this was the missing Kaitlin Aydell's MySpace page. A girl named Megan B. posted a poem she'd written for her friend:
Prayers are said,
for you alone.
We'll stand in silence,
til' you come home.
We miss you much.
You know it true.
But no matter what happens,
We'll ALWAYS love you!
Mark Sterling Lewis's arrest early Friday was not his first brush with the law.

It was late September, 1995, and a 22-year-old woman was leaving a shopping mall in East Baton Rouge. About the time she noticed she had a flat, a man approached her and offered to fix it.

The man fixed the flat and then asked the woman for a ride.

Perhaps understandably, the woman was willing to return a favor, but as she and the good samaritan drove she realized he didn't seem to have any place to go. When the young woman refused to drive any further, the man held a screwdriver to her throat.

Luckily, she escaped and was able to flag down another motorist. The abductor took off in the woman's car.

The good samaritan turned screwdriver-wielding kidnapper was Mark Sterling Lewis.

Lewis was was convicted of aggravated kidnapping, auto theft, and felony theft. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison, but 5 years were suspended.

In the end, Mark Sterling Lewis got a grand total of two years for his seemingly calculated but ultimately unsuccessful attack on the woman in Baton Rouge.

Tonight the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab is in possession of Mark Lewis's 2006 Chevy pickup, and they are combing it for evidence that might link the convicted kidnapper and thief to Kaitlin Aydell.

And late in the night, Kaitlin's friends and relatives are looking at her profile, and leaving messages, young voices echoing in the ether:
. . . i love and miss you so much. i just want you to come home safely. although it may be distant, you're my little cousin and i love you so much darling. . .
Anyone with pertinent information concerning Kaitlin Aydell or her location can call the Detective Division of the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office at (225) 686-2241 ext. 345 or (225) 686-2241 ext. 501.

UPDATE, 6:36 p.m. ET

Sadly, Baton Rouge TV station WAFB is reporting that a body has been found.

Thanks to Savvy for posting the link in the comments.

The Real Devil Inside Mr. Devlin

The most recent developments in the investigation into Michael Devlin, the alleged kidnapper of Ben Ownby and Shawn Hornbeck, have provided an interesting opportunity to critically read the news. If you click the screen capture on the left, you see the headline from the AP: "Official: Abducted Boy Guarded 2nd Teen."

Depending on the editors at various papers there are variations, but that's the headline most often used with the piece.

Along with the "revelations" by a Fox station in St. Louis of 'new' photos of Shawn Hornbeck (you know -- some of the photos that have been available at this weblog or via links from the blog since the boys were rescued?), there seems to be an appalling slant to all this. One thoroughly in keeping with the point of view espoused by the likes of Bill O'Reilly. One of the photos I'd not seen before in the gallery at the Fox site was of Shawn in what appeared to be a gangstah get-up, pointing a handgun straight at the camera.

And the headline of the article seen in the screen cap above doesn't really do any justice to the article itself -- because it's actually comprehensive, and Shawn allegedly guarding Ben is explained in a logical way. But reading the headline, I didn't expect that. News writing is all about working from the top down, most off the time. The headline is supposed to hook the reader, the lede -- first paragraph -- is meant to give the most vital information, the who, what, where, why, etc -- draw the reader in, hopefully to finish the piece.

From the headline, you wouldn't necessarily expect to find the following in the article:

Shawn's cooperation stemmed from the isolation and abuse he experienced in the first 30 days after he was kidnapped in 2002, said the official, who requested anonymity, citing a lack of authorization to speak publicly about the case.

Shawn, then 11 years old, was so traumatized after that first month that he began to see Michael Devlin, accused of kidnapping both boys, as his protector and surrogate parent, the official said, adding that such a reaction is common among abuse victims.

"He's a victim. He was kidnapped. He was taken from his parents. He was forced to live with this guy. He was forced to accommodate," the official said...
Now -- that's pretty important -- hence my added emphasis. It mitigates the implication of the headline, which by itself seems to be perfectly in keeping with the ideas some seem to have about Shawn -- that he was complicit in his situation.

And then there's this article, also from the AP: "Task force provides update of Devlin scrutiny."

To me, what you will read in this second piece is far more important than the overall content of the first article or the photographs. The fact that authorities are investigating whether or not Devlin may have had something to do with the disappearances of Arlin Henderson and Scott Kleeschulte is covered, as is the question of murdered Illinois 7-year-old Dalton Mesarchik. I touched on those 3 cases possibly being connected to Devlin here.

Now we find that more cases are being re-examined with Devlin in mind:
_ Bianca Noel Piper, a 13-year-old who disappeared after taking an evening walk March 10 near her home in Foley.

_ Angie Marie Housman, abducted at age 9 in November 1993 while walking near her St. Ann home and found dead nine days later by hunters in St. Charles County.

(...)

_ Jacob Wetterling, 11, who was abducted by an armed man in St. Joseph, Minn., in October 1989 while riding his bike with several friends...
I added the hyperlinks in the names. Follow those to learn more about the cases in question.

To put it bluntly, authorities are trying to determine whether or not Michael Devlin was a serial child killer. Joseph Edward Duncan III's equally soulless soul brother.

Yet Fox in St. Louis and headline editors at the AP and elsewhere still promote the same tropes inferring that Shawn Hornbeck was perfectly willing, even happy to remain with Devlin. What other explanation is there for the "Abducted Boy Guarded 2nd Teen" headline, for trotting out photos of Shawn throwing attitude, pointing a gun at the camera?

I'm a blogger. You know, one of those irresponsible random lunatics who will just publish any old thing? I saw nearly every one of those photos of Shawn Hornbeck at least a week ago.

I published only the needle-through-eyebrow photo, and linked some of the others. But lacking full verification on some of the images and not feeling comfortable with exposing more of this boy's life than I already had, I ignored or left other photos alone. Because it was already clear to me that the basic truth was still that Shawn was a victim. He was forced into his situation.

A pedophile with a preference for boys would argue that Shawn wasn't really coerced at all -- ever. If you've studied the ego-syntonic (behavior in harmony with the ego's goals) nature of pedophilia, you know this is the likely truth. (Thanks to Dr. Moran for introducing me to the concept of ego-syntonic behavior).

It is astonishing to me that some media outlets don't realize who is likely cheering them on each time they reveal another detail of Shawn's captivity in a way that makes him seem much more like Devlin's accomplice.

And it's disgusting that the messageboard at ShawnHornbeck.com had to be shut down and a message posted that said, in part:
Due to an overwhelming increase in 'non family friendly' postings on the Shawn Hornbeck message board, it has been decided to remove it from this site. We have tried to watch and monitor the site, and have removed postings as quickly as possible that were causing more harm than good. It is very sad that there are people out there that are only out there trying to 'find any flaw they can' and exploit it, even if the information is NOT TRUE. The family has spent all of their savings, and most of their waking days to search for Shawn and bring him home...
I know I'm not the only one who finds this outrageous, almost surreal. What the hell did this family do to cause this? Nothing. Not even the possibly ill-advised appearance on Oprah came close to meriting the Akers and Shawn Hornbeck being treated in the manner alluded to by the note quoted above.

I guess those who seem to think like Bill O'Reilly can just keep on digging up the dirt on this boy if they want, regardless of the truth of Shawn's ordeal -- a truth very few people actually know at this point.

Because I'm sure on a private message board somewhere, there are members of NAMBLA who are cheering them on.

(NOTE, 12:02 p.m. ET: In unrelated news, I've posted a blog entry at the Blogger News Network about the deadly storms that struck Central Florida early this morning. Check it out: "Deadly Twisters Rake Central Florida: 14 Dead.")

The Guerrillas and The Mooninite

At the risk of losing anything resembling respectability, I have a confession to make. I am a 39-year-old fan of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and I've been a fan almost since the show premiered. Hell, I own the first season DVD. ATHF is a masterpiece of silliness. It's surreal, sometimes gross, and often juvenile, and I make it a point to watch ATHF every chance I get.

So, if yesterday's events in Boston screw up my chance to see new episodes or the movie version of this thoroughly quirky cartoon that I thoroughly enjoy, I will be thoroughly pissed.

I might even, like, stamp my foot or something.

In case you have been hiding under a rock, here's the skinny on what happened in Boston...

It was guerrilla marketing at its worst. Turner Broadcasting's Atlanta agency, hired to promote the upcoming Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, farmed out the ad campaign to New York-based Interference, Inc. Interference Inc hired people in Boston and several other major cities to install lighted images of a character seen in many ATHF episodes, the "mooninite," Ignignokt.

The images were circuit boards with obvious wires and batteries attached. Someone saw one of these things near downtown Boston, and before you could say "dancing is forbidden" (I should give a prize to the first person who understands that reference), the bomb squad was coming in and blowing up bird-flipping mooninites all over Beantown.

The cable news channels went bonkers (leading to some pretty hilarious and clueless commentary on occasion -- one Fox News talking head's take on the little mooninite flipping everyone off was priceless, hope to find it on YouTube one day), and roads and rail lines all over Boston pretty much shut down for the better part of the day.

Bloggers figured this deal out before anyone else did, but you know, we're just a bunch of random lunatics -- nobody, least of all Boston PD, would listen to a blogger.

Eventually, two art-school dropouts were arrested for the crimes -- Sean Stevens, age 28, and Peter Berdovsky, 27 (I don't know if they are dropouts, but that's kind of fun to write).

These jackasses smirked all the way into and out of jail, giving a presser today after being released on bail that was very much in the spirit of Ignignokt and his middle finger. Reflecting that tired old pose a lot of self-styled "alternative" people have towards the media, the guys rambled on about hairstyles and Berdovsky's dreds, and most amazing of all, their lawyers let them. Way to go, guys. I know how clueless the msm can be sometimes, but -- well, this isn't as funny as it seems.

Berdovsky and Stevens were hired by Interference Inc to do the dirty deeds, and though the guys were charged with a felony -- placing a hoax device -- and disorderly conduct, they really didn't seem too worried.

Thus far, only Turner Broadcasting seems to have handled this event properly. They issued a statement that did the grown-up thing -- they took responsibility. One version of the statement aired last night between programs on Adult Swim, the block of adult-oriented toons that airs late at night on the Cartoon Network.

Still, the City of Boston is probably gonna sue, sue, sue.

I can accept that Turner is being the big kahuna here and shouldering the burden. It makes me respect the company, actually.

But I felt compelled to write something about the public relations nightmare that followed the public relations nightmare.

There was the press conference earlier today with Sean Stevens and Peter Berdovsky going on like a couple of high-school age stoners who just didn't get it, but before that, there was the sudden disappearance of www.interferenceinc.com from the Web.

In crime blogging I've encountered this phenomenon a lot -- particularly when someone is suspected of having committed a crime. If free, the suspect will move quickly to try and eliminate anything they can think of that they've put on the Internet in the past. I know no one will ever listen to me, but every time I think -- do you know how suspicious that looks? I made a promise to myself a long time ago that if (God forbid) I was ever suspected of anything, I would not touch any of my online presence. That sort of thing just screams that you might have something to hide.

Of course, it could be that Interference Inc's host servers were just slammed by a new influx of traffic, but I kind of doubt it. Someone at the funky, bold badass stealth marketing company chickened out and took their stuff offline, post-haste. I'm providing you links via the Internet Wayback Machine.

Some people think Boston PD overreacted to this situation. This is based on the pretty logical argument that the mooninite images were all over a number of major cities, including New York and Atlanta, and no one here or in NYC freaked out and called the bomb squad.

I think there's a reason Interference Inc took its site offline, though.

I've had a problem with the whole guerrilla marketing concept ever since I first heard of it. This is how Interference Inc described it when the Wayback Machine cached their site in 2004:

Examples of Guerrilla and Alternative Marketing:

Feet on the Street
Product Sampling
Publicity Stunts
Street Theater
Branded Hitchhikers
Poster Boards on Lampposts
Costumed Characters Interacting With The Public
Flyer Distribution and Posting
Stickering
Street Stenciling
Branded Free Shuttle Buses
Random Acts of Kindness

Guerrilla Marketing is delivering a relevant message to a desired individual, at an appropriate location, in a time when they are most receptive to it by any means necessary.
In the last statement I added italics because it seems to me Interference Inc screwed up those two things via Sean Stevens and Peter Berdovsky.

And you know -- I'm just kind of tired of the whole sneaky-ass gestalt involved in schemes like guerrilla marketing, anyway. Especially when it's done for a large corporate entity. If you're an independent person online, one man or woman offering something, a little slack could be cut if you try and steer some people towards your site. A lot of people don't want to pay for even a month's worth of text ads. So if they know how to work MySpace bulletins, blog comments and message boards appropriately, more power to them. That said, "blog spammers" -- people who make comments just so they can leave a weblog URL -- get routinely eviscerated at social news aggregation sites like Digg.com. Still, when I began crime blogging, I'm pretty sure I indulged in some unwitting guerrilla marketing to get people to come to the blog.

You know what all the stuff described above by Interference amounts to? Real-world spam.

Don't believe me?

If you run any kind of weblog, you eventually deal with "comment spam." Here's an example I just deleted from my personal weblog at HuffsBlog.com:
Superb! (I wrote something else and then I read below that I aint supposed ter. So I deleted it.)
At first glance I might have thought that was a normal comment, just rather vague and pointless. But of course, the screen name left by the spambot was a dead giveaway: "porn oral." Another comment stated, "Like what you have to say. Your blog makes good since [sic] to me," and that came from "liposuction south jersey."

Guerrilla marketing depends on contrasts of subtlety and theatricality. Slapping stickers on other advertisements, hanging lighted mooninite signs in out of the way places -- kind of subtle. The marketer is attempting to "resonate" with the audience, attempting to insert a visual or verbal meme into the viewer's subconscious.

The reverse, of course, is the theatricality -- costume characters approaching people on the street, "street theater" -- the stuff that makes people turn their heads and go, "what the hell?" Stuff that could make everyday people feel harassed, if you think about it.

Both are, if you think about it, the advertiser attempting to get something for nothing. They are so concerned about this overseas that the British are enacting legislation against guerrilla marketing in time for the 2012 London Olympics:
Unveiling the marketing strategy at the government-sponsored 2012 Business Summit, the LOCOG deputy chairman Sir Keith Mills promised businesses that their investment would be protected by the toughest ever anti-guerrilla marketing legislation included in the Olympics Bill. "They will have the comfort to reap the full benefits without being undermined by unauthorised companies," Sir Keith said...
This article written in 2005 for the Irish Examiner about an instance of guerrilla marketing at a major soccer match contains at least one quote that don't mince words at all:
Guerrilla marketing, ambush marketing, piggy-backing on other sponsors like leeches is disgraceful behaviour...
The article was about a call to the Irish Government to introduce legislation against this sort of thing.

Over here, we've been snickering at this sort of thing, and to some degree, we admire it. Like I said, I still have some admiration for independent people who do this kind of thing online, with some cleverness. But maybe the lesson here is this: it's time to let the sneaky bastards in the advertising world know we're on to some of the more immature b.s. they try and pull. Most major cities have permits to be acquired, processes to follow for this sort of thing -- and I doubt the placement of the ads would have changed a bit. But I get the feeling that following a few rules is not in the true spirit of guerrilla marketing.

I'm still an Adult Swim fan, an Aqua Teen Hunger Force fan, and an admirer of anything clever, out-of-the-box, and original. But Sean Stevens and Peter Berdovsky smirking at the press conference and Interference Inc yanking its site off-line to me are examples of adolescent behaviors that have become ingrained and accepted in our culture. These are things that make me laugh like an idiot when I'm watching ATHF, but someone needs to call bullshit on this sort of immaturity when it worms its way off the screen and into real life. Ignignokt's middle finger was a ridiculous, embarrassing, and for the City of Boston, tense episode. Frankly, since two of the planes that crashed on 9/11/01 flew out of Logan Airport, I don't blame Boston PD as much as some others seem to.

Fine if Turner accepts the responsibility -- seems like the response of a mature, well-established company. But don't let the idiot kids behind the overall concept off the hook, either. Maybe the English and the Irish have something to teach us, here.

As an ATHF fan, let me just say this -- don't blame Frylock, Meatwad, or Master Shake, either -- even though what Shake says is often "very baffling."

Carl, though -- yeah, you could blame Carl, and I wouldn't care.

NOTE: This link is among the most interesting I've found about this case so far, and underscores what I've said above:

"As Boston Reeled, Was Artist Asked to Keep Quiet?"

One More Post, Not About Crime

I didn't intend to make another general purpose post, but something interesting is afoot.

I simply can't think about and research crime non-stop. It leaves scabs on one's soul. So I write about other stuff, too.

The other day I wrote an entry at my personal weblog, HuffsBlog.com, about a new YouTube phenomenon, a singer named MaryAnne, who uses the screen name "YsabellaBrave."

There was still a bit of a mystery to unravel in this story, just not a crime-related mystery. I found out a little bit, and as you'll see, MaryAnne responded to the blog entry to help me correct some misunderstandings and errors.

I also wrote a slightly different post for the Blogger News Network -- more "news-y," I guess.

Well, that BNN post has been Dugg. That makes the second time in a week something related to MaryAnne has been Dugg, and if you don't know what Digg is, suffice it to say only Fark.com is a bigger source of traffic for any website lucky enough (or unlucky -- the gigantic surge in traffic has crashed sites of mine before) to get to the front page.

My article about MaryAnne was already on Digg's front page, last I looked. The creator and editor of BNN, Robert Hayes, told me an hour ago that he's already had 9,000 hits from the Digg.

Get your head out of true crime for a minute, if you are inclined, and go check out the unfolding story of MaryAnne, YsabellaBrave.

She is as intriguing and potentially as popular as Lonelygirl15. But Lonelygirl15 was an act, and I've decided, after some initial skepticism, that I believe MaryAnne is the real deal. As a singer, (something I rarely touch on when crime-blogging), I have to say I think that's pretty cool.

Now I return you to regularly scheduled crime-blogging.

Notes, 1/31/07

Anyone who has followed my blogging for some time may know that I have relapsing and remitting multiple sclerosis. I've been lucky with RRMS -- the relapses I've had have never been completely incapacitating. Painful, depressing, frustrating, but if the worst possible relapse simply makes it so I walk with a cane, I'll be fine with that. Some people with more progressive forms of MS end up in wheelchairs.

One thing I've noticed since I first developed the symptoms that would eventually be diagnosed as RRMS is what seems to be an overall weakening of my immune system. The most recent book on MS is that it is a disease that is acquired through contracting a virus, but MS sufferers may have certain genetic predispositions that make them more vulnerable to that virus. Genetic factors notwithstanding, MS is considered an autoimmune disorder.

As a result I've been sick with one virus or another and attending infections since late November. It sucks.

I hate telling people these things, both in person and online. In person -- specifically at the church where I am the tenor soloist and section leader in the choir -- I feel like people might just roll their eyes, even though I've known most folks there too long to truly believe that. Actually, my church has been wonderful to me, so I shouldn't even worry. It's just me.

Online, it's even easier for people to say, "whatever dude, you're too sick to work a computer?"

Not exactly. I still surf when I'm sick. But I find if I'm ill enough, I can't seem to put sentences together properly. My research, crucial to making my blogging different, unique -- that suffers too. Research like I do requires a focus and level of concentration that only comes when I'm in decent health.

I'm amazed I've blogged as much as I have in the last two months, really. Of course, I haven't been ill straight through, either. Here's what I've been able to identify, though:

  • My whole family passed around a lovely norovirus about a month ago -- for a guy who has only upchucked one other time in 27 years, that was great fun -- not;
  • Immediately on the heels of the norovirus, I came down with what must have been the flu;
  • That segued into an upper respiratory infection;
  • In the midst of the upper respiratory infection, I stepped out of the shower one night and was cleaning my left ear with a q-tip, and something happened. Still don't know what. I do know that I've got perhaps a 40-50% hearing loss in that ear at the moment. You can imagine how upsetting even a temporary, minor hearing loss is to any musician. I can only describe what's going on in that ear as it being like someone tucked a radio tuned to an empty channel in there. There's a layer of white noise over everything.
That's the short list. I go on, and I risk sounding like I'm 79, not 39. The only other thing worth including is the bronchitis -- yay!

My point in telling you this is to explain why there are occasionally fits and starts in my blogging. I will rapidly update stories, participate in comments, you name it, and then it may seem like I disappear. I never do -- I monitor comments no matter what, and read all the e-mail I receive. But my mental and physical energy (in spite of the sedentary nature of writing) must be close to normal before I do all this. If it isn't, I'm just a passive observer.

Some notes on cases recently covered now...

Loic Rogers

The 3-year-old Montana boy may have died through misadventure, after all.

For his family I fear that even a declaration of accidental death may not dispel a cloud of suspicion, particularly over Loic's father, Mark. I had my questions, that's for sure, and I still am troubled by leaving the youngest child outside at night to go inside and get older children -- but Loic's father Mark doesn't need any more fingers pointed at him, I think. Something like this, any parent will spend years tearing themselves apart. One passage in the Daily Interlake article linked above is worth quoting, though:
Authorities have not determined whether the [septic] tank’s damaged lid was the reason [Loic] ended up inside it.

One thing is clear, however: If the lid had been securely fastened in place, even the determined little boy could not have slipped in during just a couple minutes of the gathering dark Jan. 24...
The article does not state, nor have authorities said at this writing that Loic's drowning in that septic tank was an accident, but the tone of the piece certainly seems to be pointing in that direction.

If it is officially declared an accident, I say leave the Rogers family alone. Loic's parents, Mark and mother Ariel, were already estranged when the boy disappeared. The fracturing of a family is usually a private tragedy. Loic's disappearance turned the Rogers family's problems into fodder for the media and bloggers, because let's face it -- the vanishing of a cute 3-year-old boy on a cold, wintry night is upsetting to just about anyone with a heart. I've got a cute, blond-haired three year old son just like Loic, so naturally I was bothered by the story.

But this missing persons case turned into a death investigation is like a lot of missing persons cases -- not necessarily a crime. That's the gamble crime reporters or bloggers take when we cover them.

Brentos the Deathmaker (Brent E. High)

I've received one very angry e-mail from a relative of one of Brent High's alleged victims, Randy Brock. They had the usual problem with people posting stuff about murders like this online, much less discussing it. More than that, they really didn't like my wondering if Brent High was mentally ill. High is the 26-year-old MMORPG devotee who may have ax-murdered Randy Brock and Brent's own stepbrother, Brandon Johnson, on January 24, 2007 in Nampa, Idaho.

Shortly after I got that e-mail, a different person (maybe a friend or relative of Brent's) posted in the comments on the first entry I wrote about High, indignant that commenters were not showing much pity for Brent, who may be a paranoid schizophrenic.

Let me explain something here -- a killer is a killer. Yet I must admit, the mental illness factor gives me pause. My brother David, who committed suicide in 2000, had a terrible battle with bipolar disorder, and he'd been counter-diagnosed as being a schizophrenic at least once (please, no debates about how different those illnesses are. I'm well aware, and have always wondered why one set of doctors thought David's symptoms added up to schizophrenia). My biggest fear before David died was that he would do something to someone else one day. It was a fear because even though my brother was an aggressive, feisty guy, he wasn't a killer -- and he himself would never have emotionally survived hurting another person while in a psychotic state.

To my knowledge, my brother David was only ever a grave danger to himself.

Point being, yes, I did have to think about the idea of Brent High possibly being a schizophrenic for a bit, and figure out what I felt about that in the context of researching and writing about this double-murder.

Brent was on social security disability, or so he said. His illness, whatever it was, was a known factor. That being the case, he surely knew that he couldn't function normally without medication. Personal choices do play a role in such things. Had High's behavior prior to January 24 never been questioned, it'd be a different story. But he was posting online years ago that he was on SSDI. That means the guy had been to a lot of doctors. At some point, he had to make a decision about whether he wanted to be sane or insane. Or at the least, he became negligent where his mental health was concerned. That was a lapse in responsibility.

So I don't have any pity for him. I'm pro-death penalty, but not 100% sure High should be fried if he's found guilty of murdering Mr. Johnson and Mr. Brock. But I am 150% he needs to be locked away forever.

That's still more liberal a view than I once had. I once compared people insane enough to murder, much less butcher others to rabid dogs, who should be put down.

And if Brent High was more lucid than the first reports of the crime indicated, and that's proven, then I'll change my mind a little and say yes, put that rabid animal down.

Other stuff...

I'll be posting some guest blog entries here soon, and I am still trying to figure out how to repair what happened with CrimeBlog.US and HuffCrimeBlog.com. I'm still not convinced it's something I need to fix, either, but any further explanation of that would be the in ultimate techno-boredom for most readers. I do have access to the text of all my entries in both blogs, and am still moving things over as often as I can. If an old entry is still missing and you'd like me to ease things and move it over sooner rather than later, simply e-mail me (link above, on the right) and let me know the subject of the entry, and I'll get it posted here. I am, incidentally, pre-dating the entries as I move them, so new material is always at the top of this blog.

And that's all for now, folks.

Michael Devlin: Other Victims?

Dalton Mesarchik vanished from the front yard of his home in Streator, Illinois on March 26, 2003. He was 7 years old. Dalton had been waiting for a van to take him to a church service. That van never arrived.

Just one day later, Dalton's body was found floating in the Vermillion River. He'd been beaten to death with a three-pound Benchtop Pro hammer, a tool only available at K-Mart.

Investigators from the Streator PD, Livingston County Sheriff's Department, and the Illinois State Police launched a major investigation, following up on hundreds of leads in their efforts to find the little boy's killer.

To date, Dalton's killer has never been found. 1, 2.

The news story has been out for days, but today was the first time I saw it: "Authorities look to Mo. kidnappings for slaying lead." From the article:

Livingston County [Illinois] Sheriff Bob McCarty said the department will look to see if Michael J. Devlin, 41, of Kirkwood Mo., could have ties to the 2003 murder of 7-year-old Dalton Mesarchik.

"We will consider any and all leads," McCarty said. "We will look at a time line to see if he has any ties to the Streator area in 2003."
There is a tendency in high-profile crimes like the abductions of Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby to try to start hanging every vaguely similar high-profile unsolved crime anyone can think of on the suspect. This is one I wouldn't hang on Devlin. Not because I think Michael Devlin may have simply been a lonely, misunderstood schmoe who happened to like grabbing boys off the street -- I obviously don't think that was the case at all. No, the brutality and speed with which Dalton Mesarchik apparently was murdered lead me to dismiss the possibility.

I've wondered all along if Dalton Mesarchik's murder could be tied to a predator like Joseph Edward Duncan III. Duncan has already been convicted in the bludgeoning deaths of 3 members of an Idaho family and the murder of Dylan Groene. In addition, it was recently revealed in court documents that Duncan confessed to three other murders, in 1996 and 1997. One of those victims, Anthony Michael Martinez, was also bludgeoned to death.

Additionally, Duncan had family in Missouri, family he visited whenever the opportunity arose. That originally led me to wonder if he could be connected to Shawn Hornbeck's disappearance -- which he obviously wasn't.

The fact is, the odds are good that another predator entirely abducted and murdered Dalton Mesarchik. A predator who is still out there.

Who else has been theoretically linked to Devlin? It might be worth it to make a list:
  • Charles Arlin Henderson -- The circumstances of Arlin Henderson's disappearance were remarkably like Shawn Hornbeck's. On July 25, 1991, Arlin vanished while out riding his bike -- just like Shawn Hornbeck. Both boys disappeared from remote areas, as well. Article link: "Police Probe Whether Photos Have Ties To Devlin."
  • Scott Allen Kleeschulte -- Disappeared on June 8, 1988 from St. Charles, Missouri. The CharleyProject.org page for Scott indicates that some think he was a victim of misadventure, possibly caught out in a storm and drowned in a flash flood. But Scott did vanish from a rural area and his photos show that he resembled Arlin Henderson and Shawn Hornbeck to some degree.
... And Devlin's name has been connected to the investigation into the disappearance of Bianca Noel Piper.

It could be that Devlin was successful once, with Shawn, and it took him 4 years to build up the nerve to try something again -- the kidnapping of Ben Ownby. Seems a stretch to think Shawn was the first boy he ever targeted, though.

Another question about the time Shawn Hornbeck was held by Devlin... this article published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch brought it up.

In the piece a curious element of the timeline of Devlin's life in the last 5 years is brought to light -- from January through March of 2003, Michael Devlin was recuperating from surgery to remove two toes. Not at the apartment where Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby were found, but at Devlin's parents' house in Webster Groves, MO.

Where was Shawn Hornbeck during this period?

Anyone who has been reading my crime blogs for a while knows that it's proven that pedophiles do one thing well with adults -- they network with other pedophiles.

So I have to wonder, who would have "kept" Shawn for Devlin during those 3 months in 2003, and not asked any questions? How could Devlin have possibly explained the sudden appearance of an 11-year-old boy in his life?

Every week just brings more questions about Michael Devlin and what he may have done. None of them questions with good answers.

UPDATE (O'REILLY), 1/30/07, 3:35 p.m.

NewsHounds.US is reporting today
that Bill O'Reilly may have lost an advertiser due to the outcry over O'Reilly's ugly statements about the kidnapping of Shawn Hornbeck, in particular. The article indicates that NewsHounds has received a good bit of correspondence from readers who wrote to O'Reilly's advertisers protesting O'Reilly's statements. According to NewsHounds, Lowe's has responded appropriately. The following is what Lowe's apparently wrote in response to these complaints. Emphasis has been added:
Thank you for taking the time to share with us your concerns regarding our recent advertising on the FOX network. We appreciate your feedback and want you to know that we take your comments quite seriously.

Effective January 25, we have pulled Lowe’s advertising from the O’Reilly Factor program.

Please accept this letter as a sincere apology from Lowe’s and reassurance of Lowe’s commitment to you, our valued customer. If Lowe’s can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to write or call us. We encourage you to continue to share your comments and feedback, whenever you think it would be appropriate...
To that I can only say, HELL YEAH!!!

(TOTALLY UNRELATED NOTE: If you haven't heard of the Blogger News Network, well, now you have. I posted there quite a bit in 2005/2006, then got too busy spreading myself too thin elsewhere. Go check out my first post there in a very long time: "Who is YsabellaBrave?" It's not crime-related at all. I do think about other stuff, you know. I blogged about the same subject at my personal weblog yesterday.)
